Julian 2003 Mar 15 IDVS MARTIS
MMDCCLVI A.V.C.
The Ides are the 15th day in March, May, July, and October; the 13th in the
other months (in other words: always 8 days after the Nones).
Explanation
of various calendars
On this day in DCCX A.V.C. (44
BC) dictator Gaius Julius Caesar (born on ANTE DIEM III CALENDAS IVLII DCLIV
A.V.C. = 12 July 100 BC), originator (in 46 BC) of this Julian version of
the Roman calendar, was assassinated in the Senate by a conspiration of 60
nobles led by Gaius Cassius Longinus [-42 BC] and Marcus Junius Brutus [85
BC - 42 BC]. There followed another 13 years of civil war.
This day was also the Festival of Anna Porenna,
the deified image of an old woman who either represented the flowing river
(amne perenne) or who had baked bread to feed Roman soldiers near Bovillae.
This was a picnic day, and the Romans would travel out and set up tents and
camps around the first milestone of the Via Flamina.
